Sports betting is the act of putting money behind an outcome of a sporting event and getting paid when that result occurs. It’s a popular pastime, but there are plenty of rules that you need to know before making your bet.
Betting on sports is legal in most states, with a few exceptions. In the United States, it was previously illegal under the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA). However, that law was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2018.
The state of Iowa officially legalized sports betting in 2019. It allowed 20 operators to operate in the state. It also eliminated some wagering limits and introduced mobile betting.
Kansas was the next state to legalize sports betting, launching it on July 1, 2022. It allows betting on both pro and college teams.
Kentucky is still trying to figure out its sports gambling laws. There have been several bills proposed over the years, but none have been approved.
Ohio: In January of 2020, Governor Mike Dunleavy supported legalizing sports betting. He said it was a good way to generate revenue and boost tourism.
Missouri: Legislation was put forward in 2021, but it failed to pass. It didn’t take long for Oklahoma to legalize sports betting as well, launching it in 2022.
New Hampshire: This state passed a bill in 2020 that legalized sports betting, allowing it to be run on mobile devices. It also allowed in-person betting.
