The Rise of Official Betting

Official betting is a form of sports gambling that offers odds on the winner of a specific event. This type of wager is available online and in person in legal states across the country. Whether you are looking to place your bets on the next boxing match or a football game, official betting options can help you make the most of your money.

In a recent NCAA survey of college compliance directors, 27% reported that their schools had dealt with issues related to sports betting in the past year. This rise in sports betting has created unique challenges for college athletics, particularly in the area of integrity monitoring. The NCAA maintains a global network of contacts that includes law enforcement, gaming operators, campus administrators and specialized vendors to identify integrity concerns and prevent their exploitation.

The NFL has been at the forefront of the discussion about gambling and sports betting. The league fought to keep sports gambling banned until the Supreme Court ruled that it could not be. Then the NFL did a 180 on its stance and began embracing the industry, even partnering with sports books.

The list of states that offer legal sports betting continues to grow. The most recent addition is West Virginia, which passed legislation in 2022 and launched retail and online sportsbooks in September of that year. The state has eight sportsbooks, including SugarHouse, FanDuel and BetRivers. The state also has an online-only offering from DraftKings and FanDuel.
